4TH GRADE EXPERIMENTS

The 4th grade class at St. Paul Lutheran School recently did a landfill experiment. They took a plastic container and put a plastic bag in it to represent the plastic liner put in real landfills. They put common waste products in. They did it in layers. After they put in the first layer, they covered it with dirt and poured water on it like it had rained. They repeated this process a few times.

Here are the things they put in: Baby Ruth candy bar and wrapper, a cookie, paper clip, yarn, thumbtack, leaf, tissue, soda tab, plastic cap, elastic, chalk, sticky tack, wood, cardboard, pre-wrap, cheese, Styrofoam, egg shells, plastic box, pizza, and plastic wrap.

They put these items in October 5th, 2007 and checked them periodically. When they last checked it March 10th, 2008, there were thing things that had stayed: paper clip, yarn, thumbtack, soda tab, foil wrapper, plastic, elastic, chalk, sticky tack, wood, Styrofoam, egg shells, plastic box, wrapper, pre-wrap, and plastic wrap. The things that weren’t there (they decomposed) were : Baby Ruth, cookie, leaf, tissue, cardboard, cheese, and pizza. This experiment showed that most things we throw away stay in the ground a long time and that it is much better to recycle them.
